Story
WANLE, a second-generation Hawaiian Filipino cockfighter in rural Hawaiʻi, is determined to avenge her father’s wrongful death by proving herself as the best pitta on the island at the fall derbies. Her partner, Cal, a Native American overcoming his own violent upbringing, is wary of the violence associated with the cockfighting world—especially the men. On the eve of a big competition, Wanle’s competitors set vicious dogs loose on her property, killing one of her prized cocks, Lono. Her pacifist boyfriend gives her a final ultimatum: him or her birds.
WANLE is a heartbreaking narrative that touches on violence due to colonial trauma and the difficulties of breaking generational cycles of abuse.
At its core is the idea that life cannot be peaceful when it is focused on fighting.

While cockfighting is illegal in the US, we recognize it holds cultural significance within the history and fabric of Hawaiʻi. We aim to approach the subject of cockfighting with sensitivity both in front of and behind the camera.

Wanle’s devotion to her chickens echoes our own respect for animals, which our team has considered deeply in every approach to the story, and her willingness to subject what she loves to violence only underscores our story’s themes.
Our experienced production team will work closely with the American Humane Society to ensure a safe set for our animals and humans alike, and use clever framing, editing, and sound design to depict the fictional fights on screen.
